What is happening during peri/menopause?

Perimenopause marks the beginning of the body’s transition out of the reproductive years.

It is the gradual “retirement” of the ovaries, where hormone production (primarily estrogen and progesterone) begins to decline. This stage can last several years and often begins in the mid-30s to early 50s.

Menopause is scientifically defined as:

The complete cessation of menstruation for 12 consecutive months.

At this point, ovulation has stopped, and the ovaries no longer produce the same levels of reproductive hormones.

However, the story doesn’t end there—because your body still needs hormonal support.

How can I support this transition, naturally?

There are 3 main components to supporting the natural transition into menopause:

exercise, nutrition, and sleep.

Sleep

Support the Sleep-Wake Cycle:

  • Get sunlight exposure within 30–60 minutes of waking (resets circadian clock)

  • Minimize blue light exposure 1–2 hours before bed (screens inhibit melatonin)

  • Keep sleep and wake times consistent, even on weekends

  • Practice gentle stretching, deep breathing, or journaling before bed

Nutrition

Blood sugar crashes, mineral deficiencies, and processed foods all signal stress to the body.

  • Eat protein within 60 minutes of waking

  • Add mineral-rich foods (sea salt, dark leafy greens, pumpkin seeds)

  • Eliminate stimulants (excess coffee, sugar, alcohol) that overstimulate cortisol pathways

  • Hydrate with electrolytes, not just water

"

Magnesium, potassium, and B vitamins play critical roles in GABA production and adrenal regulation."

(Gaby, Nutritional Medicine, 2017)

Exercise

Movement helps burn off excess cortisol and restore neurochemical balance.
•    20–30 minutes of brisk walking, light strength training, or yoga
•    Avoid overtraining—focus on consistency, not intensity
•    Schedule it earlier in the day to support sleep cycles

"Moderate exercise improves estrogen metabolism and raises endorphin levels."
(Mora-Rodriguez et al., Menopause, 2015)
