What is testosterone?

Testosterone is the primary male hormone.

In school you learned that testosterone was important for a young boy developing into a man;  deep voice, hair growth, body size.  Maybe you also learned that taking "steroids" was a form of testosterone that could build BIG muscles but unfortunately caused cancer.

What you probably didn't learn was that it plays an essential role in mens health; from sleep to mood.

Testosterone is derived from cholesterol and through a series of biochemical reactions, it is converted into the active testosterone we need to optimally function as men.

Testosterone is actually anabolic AND anti-catabolic- meaning that it both builds and prevents break down of muscle tissue.

Testosterone is also converted to estrogen via the aromatase enzyme in fat cells. Unfortunately, the more exposure we have to stress, chemicals, poor food choices, and toxins, the more active that aromatase enzyme becomes which leads to higher levels of estrogen and lower testosterone.

Studies have also shown that diets high in sugar contribute to a reduction in testosterone production.
