Detox time!

It's spring time and that means it's time for our annual detox.

Why do we detox every year?


Because we are not perfect eaters, sleepers, or movers.

We are exposed to bad air, so-so water, alcohol, and a variety of environmental/household toxins.


Doesn't our body naturally detoxify all this stuff?


Yup. You have 5 detox organs- liver, kidney, lungs, intestines, and skin.

When they are not busy doing day to day stuff, they will get to the toxin elimination job.

So, if you are living like a monk and have very little stress then you probably are good to detox every few years. (because no one is escaping the ubiquitous toxins in the air, water and food we are exposed to).

Everyone else... zoom out take an honest assessment of:

  • how much stress you are really dealing with at work, home, and relationships.

  • your overall nutrition on a daily basis.

  • your exercise load daily.

  • your exposure to external toxins- skin/hair products, cleaners, air fresheners, carpet, cars, exhaust, new clothes, plastic, the list goes on and on.

This is my personal favorite because I have tried a bunch of others.


Is there something else out there that is just as good or better?

I'm sure there is. And you are welcome to do it!


Is there something I should be aware of when it comes to detox?

My recommendations are as follows:

  • don't starve. No juice detoxes; just plain dumb.

  • Detox is not just about eliminating toxins, it's about adopting healthy eating habits. So eat, and eat well.

  • eliminate the major toxin culprits- alcohol, coffee, gluten, dairy, and SUGAR.

  • use a protein powder you trust to supplement- 2-3 shakes per day.

  • lots and lots of fresh water.


Is there anyone who should NOT detox?

Yes.

If you are constipated, do NOT detox. If you can't eliminate toxins via your bowels, then you are putting toxins in circulation and concentrating toxins and holding onto it. Yuck.

You can work with your healthcare team to help resolve the constipation and then you may be a candidate to detox.
